    Abstract
The collection, analysis and display of appropriate phenological information is discussed, with emphasis on woody perennials. Phenological information is readily obtained by observing the expression of phenological activities as they result in changes in the morphological characteristics of plants. An objective of applied agroforestry research is to increase the understanding of how climatic factors and management practices can limit or favour growth and development. Phenological observations can help to achieve this. Phenological patterns for any one woody species are moderated by site, weather and management, but if data are obtained from a sufficient number of sources, such information can lead to the establishment of useful predictive models.
