dc.description.abstractThe use of information and communication technologies has improved the efficiency and flexibility in providing services to various sectors of the economy, while appreciating the fast speed of these developments; organizations are faced with wide range of challenges amongst them the threats on the information and information assets, making securing information a crucial function within the information management The purpose of this study was to examine information security and to investigate the factors that influence the level of information security in public financing institutions in Kenya and to propose a framework for improving the level of information security. Through literature review, the study presents factors that affect level of information security as organizational, human, socio-cultural, technological and external environmental factors; the study further establishes the level of information security. The study was conducted at Higher Education Loan Board and employed descriptive research design on sample size of 68 without putting into consideration the population and assuming a probability of 50/50. A single case study approach to analyze the responses to self-administered closed-ended questions constructed based on conceptual framework and results presented in tables, graphs and pie-charts. Results indicate through multiple regression analysis that there is a positive and significant relationship between all the five factors that influence the level information security. It is also evident that organizations implement information security partially as the study recommends evaluation of information security and comprehensive implementation.en
