    Abstract
This study deals with Markov chain models as applied to a manpower system. Chapter I outlines the objectives and the significance of the present study and gives a brief account of some models used in other social processes. The properties of a Markov chain together with some basic concepts are discussed in this chapter. In Chapter II ,the Markov chain model is applied to a manpower system. The models for closed and open systems are developed. Some of the Markov chain properties are interpreted in manpower planning terms. Chapter III discusses the idea of control, its aspects and types. This is applied to the grade numbers already projected. Chapter IV outlines the application of some of the models to academic staff of Mathematics department of the University of Nairobi. The results are presented in table form and ends with conclusive remarks.
