dc.description.abstract | The sediments of 'the Koobi- Fora formation in
the East Rudolf' basin have yielded a ricu assemblage of'.
f'au~a~, hominid f'ossilsand stone artef'actso Paleomagnetism
has, over the recent years, become a usef'ul
tool in the dating of'the sitas f'rom which these
assemblages have been excavated. This thesis outlines
how' paleomagnetic polarity - Stratigraphic correlation
has been used as a dating tool in this area&
The introduction, chapter one, briefly outlines
the importance of' the region of study to other earth
science subjects, the early paleomagnetic work in the
area and the aim of the thesiso
The location and geology of'the East Rudolf basin
as a whole is described in Chapter two.
Chapter three deals with the paleomagnetic
sampling techniques a.ndgives a more detailed description
of the stratigraphic succession of 'the sedimentary beds
in each of'.the three areas sampled in the 1973/4 season.
The dIstr-Lbut'Lonof'the sampled horizons is also described.
All .the samples collected in the field ,,,e remeasured
and cleaned in the laboratory The measurement procedures
and the results obtained o.'\e. given chapter six. while the
interpretation of the results obtained is outlined in
chapter seven. | en |
