Assessing Governance and Land Issues as Emergent Dimensions of Insurgencies in East African Region

Abstract

The study examined the role played by governments in East African Community in the rise of insurgent groups due to conflict over land divisions and inequality. The major research questions addressed were; what role has the EAC governments played in the rise of insurgents as a result of land conflict? What challenges has EAC governments encountered in its effort to curb land insurgency in East Africa? and What results have been achieved through the government concerned intervention in reducing land conflicts. This study assumed that the governments i.e Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi in East African Region have the potential to influence the stoppage of land conflict if they are fully determined to fight it. However it is bound to be faced with challenges and limitations which define the extent to which the governments involved may not positively contribute to the resolving of these cases. Data for this study is derived from discussions, interviews and questionnaires from relevant sources involved in land conflict in East African Region especially in Kenya. Records and other relevant documents were analyzed too. The study is significant in that its findings are informing the countries involved about prospects and challenges in the curbing of insurgent groups as a result of land conflict. Policy makers and other relevant stakeholders will find this study useful to them too.
