Africa Mobile Money Research Conference (AMMREC)

Abstract

The Africa Mobile Money Research Conference (AMMREC) was organized by the School of Computing and Informatics and co-hosted by the Kenya School of Monetary Studies in April 2012.

The sponsors were the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, USIU, KSMS, Institute for Money, Technology and Financial Inclusion (IMTFI), Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Kenya Commercial Bank, Financial Sector Deepening, National Council of Science and Technology (NCST), University of Nairobi and the CIC Insurance Group Ltd. There were several other partners as well.

The conference was attended by close to 200 people. On the Sunday prior to the conference, a workshop was held focusing on research tools and techniques for mobile money research. Panel Data Methods, Financial Diaries and Enthnography were discussed by Dr. Lucy Ndirangu from KSMS, Dr. Guy Stuart from Micro-Finance Opportunities (MFO) and Dr. Olga Morawczynski. The conference ran for two days, with key note speeches from Prof Tavneet Suri, Dr. Bitange Ndemo and Prof Kiamba. Three tracks were organized focusing on applications, research and policy.
