Varsity hosts annual ploughing competition

Abstract

The University of Nairobi has been commended for playing a key role in the dissemination of appropriate agricultural technologies and farming practices necessary for improved efficiency in agricultural production.

This was said by Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research, Production and Extension, Prof. Lucy Irungu during the annual ASK, Nairobi branch ploughing competition hosted at the Veterinary Farm, Kanyariri, College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences (CAVS), Upper Kabete Campus. Irungu commended the participants for coming up with innovative ploughing technologies which will go a long way in increasing food production, and the need for other forums that provide exchange of ideas and information sharing among the institutions for the common goal of enhancing uptake of new knowledge for improved agricultural production

The event attracted participants from various organizations such as Agricultural Society of Kenya (ASK), Brookside Dairy, IRRICO International, Sustainet EA, various secondary schools and teachers training colleges. The event also showcased an exhibition of different ploughing innovations and technologies including tractor ploughing (Mouldboard and Disc plough categories), tractor driving by young farmers (secondary schools), hand digging by the young farmers and adults. .

Present during the event was Prof. Michael W. Okoth, Associate Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, Dr. T. O. Abuom, Farm Manager, Vet Farm, Dr. John Obiero, Lecturer, Department of Environmental and Biosystems Engineering and Mr. Charles Kamau, Vice Chairman of the Agricultural Society of Kenya, Nairobi Branch, representing the ASK Nairobi Branch Chairman.
