    Abstract
The University of Nairobi has launched a Master of Science programme in Health Systems Management. This is a Vision 2030 Flagship Programme specifically developed to address the shortfalls in health systems which hamper service delivery in the health sector. Officiating the launch at School of Public Health, the Cabinet Secretary for Health, represented by Dr. Keffa Ombacho, Chief Public Health Officer, said the government was happy with the University of Nairobi for developing a Master’s of Science Programme in Health Systems Management to address the gap of leadership and management skills in the health sector, in addition to other interventions that include integration of Leadership and Management content in the pre-service training curriculum. The programme intends to train students who will be able to provide team leadership for aligning resources to improve health services delivery and strengthen critical health systems for improved health outcomes as well as support the devolution process of healthcare services at the county levels. The first crop of students was admitted in September this year. According to the Secretary, a national assessment on gaps in Leadership and Management in 2007-2008 assessment showed that 61% of the health managers felt inadequately prepared for their currents roles due to lack of skills in Leadership and Health Systems Management. The programme will develop capacity in health management in a diverse and dynamic environment. The Course targets professionals working in the health sector. It will apply cutting edge, student centered learning approaches and will expose students to contemporary health management and leadership practices and accord them national and international exposure.
