    Varsities challenged on peace

    Abstract
    This was articulated yesterday by Prof. Goran Hyden, a distinguished Professor Emeritus of Political Science and former Director, Center for African Studies, University of Florida at Gainesville, USA, make the keynote presentation. In an initiative dubbed Wajibu Wetu, public and private universities have been brought together to contribute towards the creation of a sustainable culture of peace. In his presentation, Prof. Hyden said that there are several challenges that need to be addressed to bring about the culture of peace. He pointed out that for any country; a culture of peace is an important complimentary to good governance. Pertinent issues on peace were raised by panelists Prof. Patricia Kameri- Mbote, Dean, School of Law, UoN, Prof. Winnie Mitullah, Director, Institute for Development Studies (UoN), Prof. Michael Chege, Advisor, Kenya Treasury Economic Planning and Prof. Karuti Kanyinga, Institute for Development Studies, UoN. The audience also got an opportunity to ask questions and share their views. Reflections the relative quiet following the outcome of this year’s general election and ways of domesticating and entrenching a lasting culture of peace in the country dominated the debate. The interaction which was aired live on KTN was moderated by Louis Otieno of KTN. Also present was Dr. Joseph Wanjui and Dr. Idle Omar Farah, Chancellor and Chairman of Council, UoN, respectively attended the debate.
