Determinants of Earnings by Sex in Kenya's Modern Sector

Abstract

Earnings by sex are analyzed using data from Manpower Survey of 1986/87. The semi-log linear model is utilized in the analysis and OLS used as a method of estimation. The study has four main results. The first result is that experience, education and occupation were found statistically significant for both male and female workers. Secondly, formal training is another significant variable for male earnings in wage employment. Third, the marginal effects of each explanatory variable on log of monthly earnings did not differ by sex with an exception of education and occupation. Lastly, there is no sex discrimination in earnings in wage employment.
