    Abstract
Lateral erosion in many rivers occurs on one bank while a concomitant deposition takes place on the alternate bank thus causing meandering rivers. The factors that cause this type of erosion are discussed and evaluated. A case study of the meandering reaches of the lower Tana River was also carried out in order to relate some of the factors of lateral erosion to channel morphology. Implications for water resources planning and trends of future research are also discussed
