    Abstract
The education sector is faced with many challenges such as meeting the human resource requirements for a rapidly changing and more diverse economy and ensuring quality education that meets the needs of the economy. Formal education is also faced with learning disparities and disruptions like learners’ strikes and industrial unrests. Self Directed Learning (SDL) or self study which empowers learners to take responsibility for their learning can be adopted to enhance learning as well as provides learners with flexibility and independence. In previous studies we note an agent based English learning system which can be used without restriction by using popularized cellular phones. Grockit educational software that enables learners master skills and exercise what they learn through individual study, small group study and instructor-led classes is also highlighted. Agent systems emerge to be a promising approach to deal with the challenges of the educational system because they have the potential to enhance learning by enabling scenarios which are not feasible with other technologies. And this answers why the study adopts an agent based self study management system to address the shortage of human resources requirement and produce a pool of qualified graduates matched with skills demand of the industry to ensure effective synergy
