Factors Influencing School Dropout of Girls in Mathare Informal Settlements in Nairobi County

Abstract

The study was be carried out to establish the extent to wIlicl1various factors influence school dropout of girls in informal settlements. The study focused 01'1 Mathare slums in Nairobi County. The problem of school dropout among girls is a major concern to various stakeholders ill the education sector. The problem is persistent despite interventions by the government such as free primary education and policies for girl child interventions. It was therefore, important for ibis study to further establish the extent of this problem and make recommendations to ensure realistic and sustainable interventions.

The sample of the study was 200 girls who dropped out of school and were either being assisted by development organizations to pursue vocational skills training or are working or engaged in income generating activities. The study took the form of a. survey where questionnaires were administered to the respondents. The study collected both qualitative and quantitative data.

The data was analyzed and presented in tables, graphs and charts. The presentation of data has also been based on themes identified from the variables of the study.

The findings of the study show that socio-economic factors have a higher contribution to these dropouts. Fifty percent of the responses in the study on school dropout are attributed to socio-economic factor, 32% on reproductive health factors while school environment factors are the least at 18%. The study has provided a discussion of the findings and recommendations to improve future interventions by stakeholders.
