The equality bill and its role in eliminating discrimination against women in the employment sector in Kenya

Abstract

In December 1999, parliament passed a motion that granted Gichugu Member of Parliament, Hon. Martha Karua, leave to introduce the Equality Legislation in Kenya. While introducing the motion, Hon. Martha Karua noted that the proposed legislation would be in conformity with s. 70 of the Constitution of Kenya, which states that every person in Kenya is entitled to the fundamental rights and freedoms of the individual. The proposed bill would also comply with international human rights instruments for example, The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the Convention on the Elimination of all kinds of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) instruments to which Kenya has acceded to.
