    Efficient shear reinforcement for RC beams - analysis using compression field theory

    Abstract
    It is known that inclined reinforcement is effective in resisting shear in structural concrete beams, but such reinforcement is only specified in design codes to be in the form of bent-up flexural longitudinal reinforcement. Moreover, codes place an upper limit to the proportion of the shear that should be considered resisted by such reinforcement and place more reliance on traditional vertical hoops. In this paper a case was made for inclined shear reinforcement designed to act in combination with the necessary hoops required to position the longitudinal steel. The compression field theory was presented as the rational model for predicting the behaviour of beams with such reinforcement.
