Effects of progesterone on changes in arterial pressure following operation

Abstract

In animals pretreated with progesterone, operation causes a marked rise in arterial pressure beginning about two hours after the start of the operation. No such rise occurs in animals not treated with progesterone. The rise is probably caused by the action of adrenal steroids released by the stimulus of operation and acting on a progesterone-sensitized individual. The phenomenon could explain the rise in arterial pressure which frequently takes place after parturition.
