Perspectives on archaeological heritage: a case study of Kenya

Abstract

Kenya is one of the few countries endowed with a rich and diversified archaeological heritage which spans the existence of humans from the remote past to the present. Most of the archaeological sites and monuments found in Kenya are national symbols and a source of national pride and inspiration. They also serve as major international tourist attractions.However, a deep reflection on the cultural resource management policies shows that the archaeological heritage of Kenya is under increasing threat from poor management. This article presents new perspectives in the successful management of national heritage. The article also discusses the historical orientation of heritage management in Kenya and identifies the challenges facing archaeological heritage. Similarly possible long-term conservation remedies are outlined.
