    The impact of HIV/AIDS prevention measures on behavior change among female teacher trainees: a survey in public primary teacher training colleges in Kenya

    Abstract
    The purpose of this study was to determine how HIV / AIDS Prevention Measures had impacted on behaviour change among female teacher trainees in Public Primary Teacher Training Colleges with the view of curbing its prevalence. Descriptive Survey Design was utilized in three colleges, namely Bondo, Eregi and Mosoriot to collect data from second year female students. Questionnaires were administered, The study showed that students' access to current information organised by colleges were not often. Not all prevention measures had been established within the colleges .. Participation of female students in prevention measures were satisfactory in Peer Education, Seminars and Workshops, use of V.C.T. but not in enrolment in Health Club and use of medical check-ups for Sexually Transmitted Infections. The learning institutions were generally secure but not totally from sexual harassment or rape. Factors predisposing female students to unprotected sex included peer pressure, poverty, curiosity, loose morals, , I don't care attitude', stress, drug abuse, ignorance, ineffective prevention measures and prevention measures being taken for granted. About 50% of respondents agreed that Prevention measures positive behaviour change in female students. The indices of behaviour change included increased use of condom, going for V.c.T., reduced pregnancy rate; A few unmarried students were abstaining from sex. Most female students had one sexual partner especially the married. Life-skill had greatest impact on positive behaviour change among female students followed by Peer Education. Majority of female students applied life-skill. Some of them .•. - were still not able to do this and hence involved in risky behaviour, like unprotected sex, succumbing to sex due to pressure. The respondents sugge~ conducting workshops and seminars frequently and regularly; provide both male and female condom in college among other improvements. Behaviour change needed to start with the society instituting its lost values instead of leaving it to forma! education.
