Self -help in education: the contribution of African and Asian voluntary organizations to the development of education in Kenya, 1900 - 1973

Abstract

Much of Kenya's educational development has been characterized by voluntary effort. This has long been associated only with Christian Missionary bodies. It is true that the latter laid the foundations of the Western schooling system as we know it~today. But besides them, a number of African and Asian organizations provided formal education for their children. Since the Kenyan Society is a multiracial one, and for more than half a century education was racially segregated, the importance of the role of African and Asian bodies to the development of education cannot be overemphasized. Also, to complete the history of education in Kenya, the role of these bodies must be examined. It is hoped that this thesis will be useful to students of both history as well as education. Chapter One forms the INTRODUCTiON to the thesis. It defines the nature of the problem and the need for the study.
