A survey on the impact of staff development and training programme in the hotel industry in kenya (A cased Study of Kenya Utalii College)

Abstract

The need for trained personnel has never been greater in the history of the hospitality industry. The industry continues to grow at a rapid pace, adding new jobs and increasing its use of technology. Guest demands, employee turnover, dependence on part-time personnel, and the economic realities of a highly competitive business environment all cry out for a fulltime commitment to developing and maintaining a competent work force through training. For training to receive the support it needs, managers themselves must become competent trainers. Upto the mid 90s Kenya Utalii College has been the only training institution for the hospitality industry and hence the need to be well placed to handle the human resource needs in the industry in this country. The main objectives of this study were to identify the training programmes the Kenya Utalii College offers to its staff, examining the training methodologies used in delivery of the courses, analyzing the impact of training and to recommend the appropriate measures of improving the training programmes. The study aimed at identifying the effect of training on performance, establishing whether there is a link between training and development and determine various training needs of the employees. Literature was reviewed on training and development. The literature review looked at different types of training and also others done by various researchers involving evaluation of the solutions they came up with.
