Study Of The Students' Attitudes Towards Seeking Guidance And Counselling Services In Secondary Schools In Kikuyu Division

Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to investigate the attitudes of students towards seeking guidance and counseling services. The objectives of the study were to; find out the attitudes of students towards seeking guidance and counseling, establish whether there are gender differences in attitudes towards guidance and counseling, find out the common problems experienced by students and identify the problems hindering the provision of guidance and counseling services to the students. A sample of two hundred (200) students from Kikuyu division participated in this study. The students filled in a questionnaire, that contained items on students' attitudes towards seeking guidance and counseling and the problems which students experience. A total sample of five (5) teachers in charge of guidance and counseling were interviewed each from the sampled school. Frequency tables and descriptive statistics were also used to analyze and present data. The data collected was evaluated by means oft-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The results indicate that the attitude of students towards counseling is negative. The results indicate that no significant difference exists in attitude towards guidance and counseling among students of both sexes, all classes and all ages. However there was a significant difference between boys and girls in their recognition of counseling
