The impact of guidance and counseling on pupil discipline in public primary schools in Langa'ta division in Nairobi province, Kenya

Abstract

This study set out to investigate the impact of guidance and counseling to pupil discipline in Lang'ata division of Nairobi District. In order to carry out the investigation, the researcher set objectives which sought to find out the role guidance and counseling play's in shaping pupil behavior, teacher-counselor professional level in the guidance and counseling discipline, therefore, the impact of guidance and counseling professionalism on pupil discipline. The study further sought to establish the availability of guidance and counseling resources, facilities and materials in the schools, factors affecting the implementation of guidance and counseling, and other methods which could be effective for use for positive pupil behavior modification in primary schools other than guidance and counseling. To this end, the researcher reviewed relevant literature on the historical development of guidance and counseling in general with specific reference to Kenya. The research design used for the study was ex-post facto. Subjects for this study were 14 public primary school head teachers, 14 teacher-counselors, 17 non teacher-counselors, and 238 class 8 pupils. A pilot study, which preceded the main study, was conducted in two public primary schools randomly drawn from the schools in an adjacent division. The pilot study was conducted to test the validity and reliability of instruments. Necessary modifications were made on the instruments. Data was analyzed using percentages.
