    Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of the Strengthening of Mathematics and Science in Secondary Education (SMASSE) programme on performance of physics in Nyeri South District which has remained below average despite the implementation of the SMASSE programme. Five research questions were formulated to guide the study. The study employed the descriptive survey. The sample therefore comprised of 20 headteachers, 68 physics teachers and 360 students. Data for this study was collected using three sets of questionnaires; for head teachers, teachers and students. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected. Findings were analyzed as per the objectives of the study. They revealed that performance in physics in schools had remained the same or had not improved significantly, since year 2001 even after the introduction of SMASSE programme. Findings also revealed headteachers had a positive approach towards the SMASSE programme. Findings indicated that teachers used lecture method in teaching of physics hence they did not use the recommended methods of teaching physics. The study recommended that there is need for the school administration to assist teachers in improvization of teaching and learning materials so that inadequate of such resources is not a hindrance to the implementation of the programme. It was also recommended that the Ministry of Education should review the training provided during SMASSE to evaluate whether it is actually achieving its objectives. Lastly it was recommended that there is further need for the school administration and the Ministry of Education to inculcate positive attitude to teachers for example by providing them with incentives during such training so that they are motivated to attend the programmes. The following were the areas of further research as per the findings of the study. A study should be done to establish in-service provision needs for teachers in secondary schools in Kenya. A study should be conducted to establish how qualifications of trainers and facilitators influence the implementation of SMASSE programme.
