Factors contributing to students' poor performance in KCPE in Kadibo Division of Kisumu East District, Kenya

Abstract

The importance of the K.C.P.E. examination as a terminal examination cannot be underestimated. In Kadibo Division of Kisumu East District, the good performance in the K.C.P.E. examination in the Division has been declining for the past five years, and this calls for investigation. The purpose of this study was to investigate, through descriptive design, the underlying factors for this poor state of performance. The study will adapt a descriptive survey design, questionnaires from the students of Class Eight, teachers and headteachers.

Interview schedules were also used for Quality Assurance and Standards Officers (QASOs), Teacher Advisory Centre Tutors (T.A.C), Divisional Educational Officers and District Education Officers. The researcher also used a systematic observation schedule in class to monitor the activities of teachers and students. Lastly, a checklist was used to check the physical facilities and learning - teaching resources in schools. With the data organized, an SPSS computer program was used to analyze the descriptive statistics. Findings are presented in tables, frequency graphs, distribution charts and percentages.
