Women's role in the supply of fuelwood

Abstract

In the context of women and the environment, women's role in the supply of fuelwood as a source of domestic energy is an example of the enormous responsibility shouldered by women, especially in the face of the dwindling stocks. This chapter looks at the role of women in the supply and utilization of fuelwood in Kenya under the following section headings: fuelwood as a source of domestic energy; the critical position of women; and the need for cost-effective wood lots. The design of any reforestation programme must take into account the interaction between women and the environment, making rural women its major target group
