    Factors influencing teacher turnover in private secondary schools in Getambe and Mosocho Divisions in Kisii County, Kenya

    Abstract
    The study sought to investigate on factors influencing teacher turnover in private secondary schools in Getembe and Mosocho Divisions in Kisii County. The objectives of the study were; to establish how motivation influences teacher turnover in private secondary schools, to investigate how work related stress influences teacher turnover in private secondary schools, to assess how administration influences teacher turnover in private secondary schools and finally, to explore how work environment influences teacher turnover in private secondary schools. The literature review is related to the objectives of the study which included the teacher turnover as a result of motivation, teacher turnover as a result of work-related stress, teacher turnover as a result of administration and lastly, teacher turnover as a result of work environment The research adopted a descriptive survey design. The target population included all the 100 private secondary school teachers in Kisii County. The study sample constituted all the 72 teachers in Getembe and Mosocho Divisions in Kisii County. The study employed purposive sampling to select the sample. Data was collected using questionnaires. The raw data collected was analyzed using Statistical package for Social Sciences (SPSS) in order to code the questionnaire responses and tabulate the data in form of frequencies and percentages. The findings of the research showed that the turnover of teachers occurs as a result of the administrators not assisting the teachers in disciplining students and not sponsoring the teachers to attend seminars. It further indicated that financial dissatisfaction of teachers results to teacher turnover. The turnover of teachers occurs as a result of workload in terms of the number of lessons taken by the teachers which are many and do not allow them to assist students during their private studies resulting to teachers not able to achieve their objectives. Teacher turnover occurs as a result of teachers not provided with conducive working conditions for instance, being supervised when performing their duties hence they cannot be able to utilize their skills and knowledge freely. Recommendations were made by the respondents to the effect that administrators should give moral and financial support to the teachers in order to retain them, they should also provide for the necessary teaching resources, hire more teachers and give minimum supervision to teachers when they are performing duties.
