African indigenous Education as practiced by the Kipsigis of Kenya

Abstract

The Africans had their own system of education before the coming of Europeans. They study aimed at investigating Kipsigis indigenous education, particularly its aims, content, teachers and methods of instruction. This study was carried out in Bormet and Kericho counties. The study was conducted through historical method of research. Primary and secondary sources of data were used. Primary sources used included historical document from Kenya National Archives and oral testimonies. The data collected was evaluated using internal and external criticism and was then analyzed qualitatively

The study reveals that the Kipsigis indigenous education was elaborate. It has specific aims of preparing the children to be useful and responsible members in the society. The content was determined by the environment and was practical. The teachers were parents, others children and specialists. Two methods of instructions were used; formal and informal. Informal method included use of observation, participation and oral literature. Formal method was used during initiation and apprenticeship.

It is recommended that oral literature of the Kipsigis be incorporated in school curriculum to enrich the children in the African culture. Also songs and dances to be performed in schools not only for entertainment but also to appreciate the rich and varied cultures in Kenya. The virtues taught in Kipsigis indigenous education such as honesty, humility, respect and hard work to be instilled in schools.
