    Preparedness of Non-formal education providers in enhancing access to primary education in Starehe District, Nairobi, Kenya

    Abstract
    The study sought to determine the preparedness of Non formal education providers in enhancing access to primary education in Nairobi case study of Starehe district informal settlement. The main objective of the study was to determine the state of physical facilities required to enhance learners' access to primary education in the informal settlement, adequacy of teachers, teaching and learning resources, and teachers' preparation of the mandatory professional documents and the impact of feeding programme. From the literature review, the conceptual framework was drawn based on a set of attributes; physical facilities, trained teachers' teaching and learning resources and school feeding programme that may have had influence on the preparedness of Non formal education providers in enhancing learner's access to primary education in the urban informal settlement. Thirty five Non formal education institutions were selected for the study out of which 35managers / head teachers, 35 teachers and 70 pupils were purposely selected for the study. The descriptive survey design was used and a questionnaire was the sole research instrument. The finding of the study shows that the states of physical facilities were in a deplorable state and far from adequate. The quality of physical facilities was demotivating to both teachers and pupils to effectively teach and learn respectively. The study also revealed that most of the teachers in the Non formal institutions were not qualified for example, 77.1 % of managers/ head teachers had KCE certificate and below and over 70% of teachers were untrained.
