Teachers perceptions towards the implementation of pre-vocational subjects in public primary schools in Bungoma Municipality, Kenya

Abstract

The study focused on teachers perceptions towards the implementation of prevocational subjects, in particular Art and Craft in Primary schools in Bungoma Municipality, Bungoma County. The objectives were; to establish teachers readiness to teach Art and Craft in primary schools, to establish adequacy of qualified teachers who have specialized in teaching Art and Craft, to assess the availability of teaching materials and teaching facilities of Art and Craft, and to establish the teaching methods teachers use to teach Art and Craft.

The research design used was a descriptive survey, The study had a target population of 615 teachers. The sample size was arrived at by using random sampling procedure. The instruments used in this study were; questionnaire, observation and interview schedule. The techniques used in analyzing data was descriptive statistics which used frequencies, percentages and averages especially the mean.

The findings of the study were; very many teachers who teach in primary schools were PI certificate holders and very few of them have specialized in teaching Art and Craft. Additionally, teachers had very limited professional records for Art and Craft. Further, there were almost no teaching materials for Art and Craft. The teaching methods were also not appropriate for Art and Craft. This shows that there is ineffective implementation of Art and Craft and therefore the teachers are having negative attitude towards the teaching of the subject

The recommendations for this study Were as follows; The government should put a policy in place to see to it that Art and Craft is evaluated in primary schools in Kenya, because this is a talent based subject which can help the pupils be self reliance in future. The government should also make in-service training mandatory for teachers in primary schools so that all teachers are able to teach Art and Craft. The study suggested that teachers should utilize further development on in-service training.
