Factors influencing participation of women in development projects Mweiga Location, Kieni-West District, Nyeri County, Kenya

Abstract

This research study covered Mweiga Location in Kieni - West District. Other Locations in Kieni-West District are Endarasha, Gataragwa and Mugunda. Mweiga Location is comprised of the following Sub-Locations: Mweiga town, Bondeni, Amboni, Kamatongu and Njeng'u Sub-Location. The study aimed at finding out the factors that influence the participation of women in performance of development projects. Although the Government has taken various measures to sensitize women to participate in large numbers the general scenario is that there are various forces influencing women participation in development projects.

This research study strived to finding out issues that prevent women from active participation in development projects. The independent variables of this study were: - barriers and constrains to women in Development projects. These included: Educational levels, socio-cultural factors, security concerns, sensitization by the media and multiple roles of women. The dependent variable was women in performance of Development projects.

The study employed descriptive approach of data collection methods. A stratified sampling method was used to identify the required sample population. The questionnaire was completed by 60 women who were in development projects and it was closed and open ended. The questions that were asked generated demographic information about women participation in development projects.

The data was analyzed using descriptive analysis SPSS some of the key findings in the study were that most women had low educational levels in development projects. Their participation in development activities is greatly influenced by socio-cultural issues.The government should strengthen the relevant policies and legislation development projects with an. objective of creating a level playing ground in projects. Women in development projects should be encouraged to work as a team and form lobby groups who will highlight their needs and seek for more representation in development projects.
