    Abstract
Determination of the maximum respiratory rate of the SHAM-sensitive pathway in procyclic Trypanosoma brucei indicated that SHAM is a specific inhibitor of the SHAM-sensitive pathway and does not interfere with the functioning of the cytochrome system over the range of concentrations used. Further evidence for a branching of the SHAM-sensitive pathway from the cytochrome system was provided from experiments in which the electron flux through the cytochrome system was varied by using different concentrations of cyanide. It is suggested that the branching point of the SHAM-sensitive pathway is above cytochrome c, possibly in the ubiquinone-cytochrome b region, and the proposed branching point is indicated in a diagram.
