    Abstract
This thesis in adult education gives an evaluation of the correspondence component of a local community project situated in a rural village in Kenya which was initiated in 1977. 46 primary school leavers registered in seven different subjects with the Correspondence Course Unit and were provided with a classroom in one of the village's primary schools as well as with study materials and relevant text books produced by the unit. 26 of the students dropped out but the remaining passed at least one of their examinations. The study argues that the problem of unemployed youth and primary school leavers lies not only in lack of employment opportunities but also in lack of education. Correspondence education may be an effective solution to their problem because it entails a much closer integration of educational activities with community life and is less expensive, more flexible, distributive and better suited to the prevailing state of the economy.
