    Abstract
Carbon reserves of selected natural ecosystems in Africa and their initial C losses following land conversion are described and losses under continuous cultivation in that East African highlands are examined. The effects of various land management strategies on the current and potential impacts on C sequestration are considered. A review of data collected from case studies from Kenya suggests that the development of integrated soil management strategies improve the organic C status of soils.
