Shorthand has been described as any system of rapid writing using symbols or shortcuts that can be made quickly to represent letters of the alphabets, words or phrases. This study sought to find out the factors influencing performance of candidates in shorthand examinations in training institutions in Nyeri sub-county. After giving a background to the study research questions and corresponding research objectives were developed. Relevant literature was reviewed and a research methodology developed. Questionnaires were developed and administered to respondents, analysis was carried out and results presented in form of diagrams such as frequency and percentage tables, bar graphs and pie charts. It was concluded that the number of typewriters in shorthand training institutions in Nyeri sub-county was less than the number of students and therefore students were not given enough time for practice. It was also concluded that the teachers were adequate and qualified enough to teach shorthand. The study recommended that the ministry of Education harmonises the entry point for the shorthand courses and also ensure that institutions offering shorthand have adequate facilities. The study also recommended that the Kenya Institute of curriculum development puts in place a proper curriculum backed by adequate locally developed and selected international teaching-learning materials. Finally the study recommended that institutions offering shorthand ensure that there are adequate teaching- learning facilities for use by students and also ensure they have enough teachers who are well trained to handle the students.en_US
