Factors influencing implementation of Information and Communication Technology in public secondary schools in Bureti District, Kericho County

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to investigate factors influencing the fmplementation of leT in publicsecondary schools in Bureti District, Kericho County. The study was presented in five chapters. The study was guided by following objectives: To establish the extent to which infrastructure influence implementation of lCT in public secondary schools in, to determine extent to which cost of equipment faces implementation of lCT in public secondary schools, to evaluate how trained manpowerinfluence implementation of lCT and to assess how of school internal lCT policyfaces implementation of leT in public secondary schools in Bureti district. Literature review was done under sub headings on implementation of ICT in schools covering global and local review. Theoretical framework espoused by Kast and Rosenzwag (1985) was used for this study. Conceptual framework shows variables and their expected directional effect on the output (implementation of lCT). The study adopted descriptive survey research design where bo1h quantitative and qualitative methodologies were employed. The study also used close-endedquestionnaires as research instrument.

The target population was245 from 45 schools in three divisions; this comprised of Head teachers, HODS, teachers of computers and support staff who were interviewed on factors influencing implementation of ICT in their respective schools. A total of 150resoondents wererandomly selected to make the sample. Piloting was done in Konoin District which was not part of the area to be studied. Validity and reliability of the instruments was ensured by split half technique and scores were correlated by Spearman Brown prophecy formula.The data collected was analyzed and presented with the help of SPSS(Statistical Package for Social Science).Further, analysis was descriptive in nature and that it was accompanied by the use of tables, frequencies and percentage. Based on the findings of the study the researcher concluded that infrastructure. staff training. cost and internal lCT policy influences implementation of lCT in public secondary schools in Bureti District. The researcher made the following recommendations; schools should be assisted by the government and private sector to purchase computers, put up computer labs and access internet at cheaper cost. Induction and in-service be given to all school staff in order to implement K'T in their schools, further, government should make budgetary allocations every year to be used in implementation of lCT and lastly schools heads be made aware of National lCT policy and they should operationalize the same in their schools. The researcher also suggested fur further research to be carried out on ways to be undertaken to curb these factors.
