| dc.description.abstract | The purpose of the is study was to investigate factors influencing participation of women in local projects in Uriri District. The study was justified by the presence of a lot of activities being undertaken in the district for purposes of addressing the needs of the local poor, yet conspicuously missing was the face of women. The study was informed by the objectives; influence of training, gender related issues, access to resources and accessibility to information, on participation of women in local projects in Uriri District.
The study was considered vital to the project initiators, especially women in being informed on measures be adopted to make such initiatives productive. The NGOs, donors, the government and other stakehol~rs also stood the chance to benefit from the results of the study, since impediments to project success would be discovered and remedial measures suggested. In this study, a descriptive survey research design was adopted. The study focused on a target population of 720 women who took part in various local projects in the District.
The study used a sample size of 72 respondents selected using stratified random sampling techniques on the basis of the project areas; women group water projects, bee keeping projects, merry go round projects and poultry projects. Questionnaire, used as the main data collection instrument, was pre-tested with a small sample comprised of 10% of the sample size(7 respondents).Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics in the form of frequencies and percentages and information was presented using frequency distribution tables.
The study discovered that participation of women in local projects in Uriri District was poor, for these women were disadvantaged by the challenges of training, resources, information and gender related issues. In the study it was recommended that the government to formulate policies that would enhance participation of women in local projects. Moreover, the study also raised concerns for further research on areas such as why CDF projects are effective in Kasipul Kabondo constituency, yet other constituencies do badly, how young people can be involved in community development outfits, and the role of politics on project success. | en_US |
